Cutting-edge lab to break barriers in breast cancer detection: A new era of screening unveiled

Health Industry Hub | May 17, 2023 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: Australia’s BCAL Diagnostics has unveiled its cutting-edge development and clinical service laboratory in Sydney. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone for BCAL as it forges ahead in its mission to revolutionise breast cancer screening.

The company’s non-invasive blood screening technology, boasting an impressive 91% sensitivity and 80% specificity, is set to complement existing breast cancer screening methods, including mammography. BCAL aims to develop a comprehensive monitoring and screening test suitable for women of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of their location.

Equipped with the latest Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) platforms, the newly established laboratory will serve as a hub for advancing BCAL’s ground-breaking clinical research findings. It will also play a pivotal role in collaborating with Precion, BCAL Diagnostics’ US commercialisation partner, to establish and validate workflows, test protocols, and algorithms for the innovative BCAL blood screening tool. Additionally, the laboratory will facilitate ongoing and planned clinical validation studies.

The completion of these studies and the subsequent accreditations will enable BCAL’s blood screening tool to be made available to medical professionals and patients as an in-house developed test. Under this system, patient samples will be collected and forwarded to BCAL’s laboratory where they will undergo testing to identify the proprietary BCAL lipid signature expressed by breast cancer cells.

“The opening of our soon-to-be fully commercial and accredited laboratory brings us one step closer to accomplishing this goal,” declared Jayne Shaw, Executive Chair of BCAL Diagnostics.

“Not only will this laboratory serve as a catalyst for our current and future test developments, but it will also provide market access opportunities for other companies seeking entry into the Australian market.”

BCAL will present a poster entitled Lipodomic Signature from Plasma to Detect Localised Breast Cancer at the highly anticipated 2023 ASCO Annual Meeting in June.

With the opening of its state-of-the-art laboratory, BCAL Diagnostics’ blood screening technology inches closer to transforming the landscape of breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
