Why ESG is a critical focus for Sanofi and Philips: Leaders talk the journey to meaningful impact

Health Industry Hub | May 8, 2023 |

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has become increasingly significant in the pharmaceutical and medtech industries for several reasons.

Rebekah Cassidy, Deputy Head of Corporate Affairs, Sanofi ANZ and Sarah Al-Hashimi, Corporate Communications Leader, Philips ANZ joined Health Industry Hub to discuss how the companies have prioritised ESG initiatives as a way to improve their overall sustainability and address the voices of internal and external stakeholders.

“People are searching for purpose. It’s really hard for our employees to separate their personal lives from professional lives. People come to work with expectations and values when it comes to social issues. They want their employers to mirror what they care about and involve them in the process, especially through grassroot initiatives at Philips,” said Sarah.

Bek added “Regarding regulatory interest in ESG, in particular environmental impact, the big thing that I would say is that your ESG programs are not PR or marketing programs. There needs to be assurance that the claims that every company is making are true and correct, and confidence that the independent assurance is in place as well. That is a really big focus for Sanofi.”

Australia has no overarching source of ESG regulation or framework. Bek and Sarah addressed the reasons policy makers should drive a national approach and how companies like Sanofi and Philips are contributing to this journey.
